The case of Bronze Diabetes...

For many years Jason had looked perpetually tanned. Indeed, even in the cold Canadian winter months he always appeared as if he had just returned from a Florida holiday. He wasn't, however, equally pleased about the fact that he had just found out he had diabetes. It had been discovered at the time of a routine check-up. At the same time, Jason's doctor also found that his liver tests were slightly high. Some additional blood tests were done and when the results came back, Jason's doctor called him in to discuss things.

"Jason," his doctor said, "I've found something that requires treatment as soon as possible." The treatment was started right away. Shortly thereafter, Jason moved away but he continued his therapy. Two years later he moved back and went to see his old family doctor. His family doctor didn't recognize him.

"Jason, is that really you? You look so different. Your bronze colour has disappeared. You're so much paler now."

Jason replied, "It's because of you, doctor. Or, at least, because of your treatment."

So then; what treatment caused this man with diabetes to lose his bronze colour?

1. metformin (Glucophage)
2. insulin
3. monthly blood letting
4. kidney failure
