The Case of mistaken obesity...
Terry didn't know if he was angry or hurt or both. What he did know was that he had taken offence at what his friend had said to him. Terry had diabetes and he felt that he was doing his best to look after himself well. He was eating properly and exercising regularly. His sugar levels were very good, though he recognized they were not perfect. One day he was talking to his best friend Bob and Bob (who also had diabetes and had just completed a diabetes education course) asked Terry how much he weighed and how tall he was. Terry replied that he was five foot, eight inches and weighed two hundred pounds. To which Bob said, "Well, Terry, I've calculated your body mass index (BMI) and it's about 30 and I can tell you, my friend, that that makes you obese. You'd better lose weight or else you're in for a heap of trouble!"
To which Terry replied, "Bob, you don't know what you are talking about! Not only am I not fat, I am perfectly fit. I do agree that my BMI is higher than normal, but, buddy, in my case that does not mean I'm overweight because (complete Terry's sentence with one of the following):
1. I refuse to believe it.2. BMI values are important only for women.
3. I pump iron.
4. I am a vegetarian.
5. My waist circumference is under 36 inches.
